1984年Metallica還沒有像現在這樣全世界知名的程度，
但"Ride The Lightning"專輯中的這首"Fade to Black"，
卻是Metallica在'80年代，少數在演唱會上知名且經常被電台播放的曲子。
簡單的旋律，微妙的情緒推進，被監禁、壓抑、窒息的感覺，
曲子平靜卻逐漸帶進強而有力、自殺、無比冰冷的歌詞。
整首歌可分成兩個部分，一開始空心吉他與主唱的聲音，
一直在自我悔恨壓抑的漩渦中打轉，到曲子中間，開始強烈的鼓點與
強力吉他節奏，彷彿把所有的憤怒爆發出來。
在"Fade to Black"這首歌出現之前，重金屬音樂還未曾出現過，
在探討精神靈魂如此深入的歌曲，這首歌改變了許多重搖滾音樂的創作人
把現實主義更深層的心靈探討導入到重金屬音樂裡
Metallica也延續這樣的風格，創作出80'年後的幾張專輯
