一首超越永恆的歌--再談Where Did You Sleep Last Night

Where Did You Sleep Last Night--

1994在Kurt Cobain自殺後，MTV台在四月底開始播放Kurt所錄製的"Unplugged"演唱會，
特別的是在這場演唱會最後所唱的這首"Where Did You Sleep Last Night"，
是唯一一首未曾收錄在Nirvana專輯中的一首歌，這首老藍調歌謠Kurt沙啞歌聲演唱更顯的淒涼。

事實上，這是一首民謠，較為人熟知的歌名是"In the Pines"，最早應該是出現在1870年，
而這首歌也成為這位西雅圖Grunge傳奇歌手Kurt曲目的最後一章。
這首歌曾被多位歌手收錄過，包括民謠傳奇Leadbelly， Joan Baez 與 Pete Seeger，
鄉村樂先鋒Bill Monroe 與 Chet Atkins，搖滾歌手Sir Douglas Quintet 與 Duane Eddy，
還有包含流行樂 Connie Francis與 爵士薩克斯風 Clifford Jordan。

在1970年的一篇對這首歌研究的論文裡，Judith McCulloh找到了這首歌的160個版本，
不禁讓人想到，為何這首歌經過了這麼多的年代會被如此的傳唱，
真正的原因並不是因為這首歌有特別的故事或音樂形式，而是因為他那極度灰暗的情感，
傷感的記憶總是比甜美的情感，更能長久的流傳下去。

這首歌最早應該是源自於南Appalachians，1917年Cecil Sharp in Kentucky所紀錄的
應該是最早被印出來包含四線與旋律的譜，而在1925年開始出現"In the Pines"與"The Longest Train"
則是最早的留聲機錄音版本。

鄉村歌手Dolly Parton在1978年的專輯
"Heartsongs"中收錄了這首歌，在發表時她提到:
"有些歌在我的家族裡傳唱了好幾個世代，有些我不記得，沒聽過或不會唱，
但大概有3，4首歌總是會被大家唱到的，而'In the Pines'就是其中一首，
因為這首歌容易彈容易唱，容易合聲，也很有情感，對於一般人來說是很完美的一首"

Kurt Cobain又是如何找到"In the Pines"這首歌?
在Nirvana成名之前Kurt與Mark Lanegan(西雅圖搖滾樂團Screaming Trees的團長)
因為喜歡Leadbelly的音樂而建立相當好的友誼。
Lanegan手上有Leadbelly 1944年的"Where Did You Sleep Last Night"
78轉錄音版本，Lanegan說他爸爸在他小時後給了他這張唱片，他爸是個學校教師，
他在學校的閣樓裡所發現了這張老唱片，後來Lanegan與Cobain共同錄製了一張Leadbelly歌曲的EP，
但最後只有"Where Did You Sleep Last Night"這首被收錄到1990年Lanegan的"The Winding Sheet，"專輯內，
在這個錄音版本，主唱是Lanegan，吉他由Cobain所彈奏。

雖然在Lanegan的"The Winding Sheet，"與Nirvana的"Unplugged"專輯內Leadbelly都是掛名
"Where Did You Sleep Last Night"這首歌的作者，但實際上Leadbelly也是第二手的改寫而已，
依照Alan Lomax的考究Leadbelly學習這首歌一部份是來自於1917年Sharp版本，另一部份則是
來自於1925留聲機的錄音。

James Leisy在他1966的一本書 "The Folk Song Abecedary."寫到
"這首來自南方鄉村獨特的藍調歌曲，就如同folk-song裡無止境的恐懼盒子一樣，
你挖的愈深，你會找到越多"。

這首歌的各個版本基本元素是類似的，在內容上會有部分的變化，
例如"found in the driver's wheel"可能是wife 或husband或 parent ，
"body has never been found."可能是Men， women或迷惑的青年，
消失在黯淡的竹林裡，隱喻的是性，孤獨和死亡。

在Mr. Monroe的版本裡這首歌裡的不安可怕是來自於強烈寂寞的聲音，
利用小提琴與歌調合聲營造出引起冷風吹起的感覺，
歌詞裡關於斷頭的描述，與謎一樣的火車讓人覺得害怕，
還有歌詞裡一段無盡的航行的描述，
"我問船長，現在是哪一天什麼時候了，他說我已經把錶丟掉了"
都讓人感到強烈寂寞孤獨的感受。

在其他版本裡就比較清楚的做內容聚焦，如同小說家Ms. McCrumb所寫的:
"有一個女人做了這社會所無法接受的事，她被抓到了，她的丈夫
要求她說:不要騙我，跟我說，你昨晚在哪裡過夜"
在Kossoy Sisters的版本裡寫到:
"小女孩，小女孩，你昨晚在哪裡過夜，怎麼沒讓你媽媽知道"。
儘管各個版本的"In the Pines"，所有的問題都不是對男性發問，
而女性都是被問的對象:
"Where did you get that dress， and those shoes that are so fine?"
所有的答案都是:
"from a man in the mines， who sleeps in the pines."

在Mr. Jordan的爵士版本裡於1965年在Atlantic錄製由
歌手Sandra Douglass演譯Leadbelly的"Black Girl."裡更是清楚的寫到
"在松林裡的女人，他的先生死在火車下，除了賣淫，她已別無選擇，
她唱著"你讓我哭泣，你讓我悲嘆，你讓我離開了家"
似乎是對他的悲慘命運，似乎是對他已化鬼魂的先生所訴說"

1994年The Hole(Cobain的遺孀Courtney Love所組的樂團)9月在紐約的演唱，
最後的安可曲演唱的是"Where Did You Sleep Last Night."
唱著"don't lie to me"就如同Kurt的演唱一樣
在這個廣場裡Kurt的歌聲彷彿凍結在這裡而成為永恆
也在歷史上為這首歌留下了一個Nirvana版本

昨天晚上用一點時間看完了"最好的時光"第一段"戀愛夢"
看完後，好像讓自己又談了一次戀愛

喜歡這電影，一方面這個故事的時代背景是自己很喜歡的純真年代
恰如其份的音樂與配樂，像英文老歌Rain and Tears和Smoke gets in your eyes
文夏的戀歌，星星知我心，影像與音樂，完全的帶你走入那個逝去的時代
還有就是故事中投射太多自己生命中相似的記憶

從張震當兵休假回到撞球室要找秀美，卻發現秀美已經離開
開始由高雄一路找到嘉義再找到虎尾，沿路看著地標，一站又一站
當在撞球室終於看到秀美，也快到了收假的時間
即使心裡有多開心，震還是一付很酷的樣子
秀美心裡的開心
一方面要繼續工作，卻又不時的與張震兩眼對望
可以感受到他們彼此間那份重逢的喜悅

終於等到秀美下班
兩個人在麵攤上吃麵
沒有對白，只是一個固定鏡頭

最後到了要離開的時候
秀美陪震到車站等車，已經錯過了最後一班車
站在雨中 兩個人的手終於握在一起

也許你也有過為了見喜歡的人一面，由南到北
也許你還記得第一次握著自己喜歡的人的手那份感覺
也許你還記得初戀的感覺
這部電影 都值得你把記憶找回來

夢想的烏扥邦-Big Country

在諾大的舞台上，四周是一片漆黑，
現場唯一的SpotLight燈光 打在彈奏音樂的吉他手身上
低著頭用匹克緩緩彈奏出以Compress與Reverse營造出如鈴聲般的吉他音色
全場聽眾屏息聆聽，這就是Big Country的Chance


高中時代那個剛開始接觸西洋音樂的年代，正是Modonna，Michael Jackson等的全盛時期。
所接收的西洋音樂多是跟著排行榜聽，如余光音樂雜誌、中廣音樂網、閃亮的節奏。
高二班上有一個同學，算是他幫我打開搖滾樂世界的一扇窗，帶我聽了Eagles，Beatles，雖說當時沒什麼感覺，可是幾年後打開他要我去買的幾張專輯，果然張張是經典大作。

初次聽到Big Country的音樂是他把隨身聽的耳機拿給我，播放的音樂是Big Country的Chance，
光聽到前奏就感覺全身起雞皮疙瘩，當時的想法就是趕快回家彈吉他。
後來放假後開始在高雄各大唱片行找Big Country的專輯卡帶，
第一張Crossing是怎樣也找不到，只好跟同學copy了一份卡帶，
倒是第三張專輯The Seer由當時的齊飛唱片代理，專輯裡"Eiledon"裡所描述的美麗境界，
"Hold The Heart"裡縈繞不絕的蘇格蘭風笛聲，都讓我反覆的把這張卡帶聽了又聽。

這些年，接收了大量的音樂資訊，已經漸漸忘記自己曾經喜歡的Big Country，
也因為收藏的卡帶由CD取代，沒有CD的那些專輯也逐漸被自己淡忘掉。
前幾個月在台北火車站前的啟元二手唱片行逛，居然找到一張德國版的The Seer專輯，
只花190元就讓這個樂團有再度回到我的音樂收藏。

關於Big Country以下做一些簡短介紹
由Stuart Adamson所成立的蘇格蘭樂團Big Country，其最有特色的是音樂充滿濃濃的蘇格蘭搖滾風。
有著鈴聲與風笛般吉他音色的Big Country，在80年代初期新搖滾樂團內相當獨樹一格的樂團。
英國出生的Adamson在1981年離開了Skids這個蘇格蘭Punk樂團，
找來了小時後玩伴朋友Bruce Watson擔任第二把吉他手，
再找來Clive Parker與他的兄弟Pete以及Alan Wishart組成最初的樂團雛形。
但很快的bass手Tony Butler 鼓手Mark Brzezicki就取代了他們的位置。
並與Polygram's Mercury簽約於1982年發行了第一張單曲"Harvest Home"
不斷的巡迴開場表演一直到"Fields of Fire"打進了英國的Top 10。

Big Country的發展並不順遂，也許是開始幾張的同質性太高，在一些音樂評論裡
並未給予高度的評價，但這並未降低自己對這樂團的喜愛程度，很可惜的是在
2001年Adamson 被發現在夏威夷的旅館內死亡，而為這樂團畫上一個句點。
